Development of a Point-of-Use Drinking Water Purifier Using Aluminum Oxide-Based Flocculent-Disinfectant Composite

One in every three people the world still lacks access to clean drinking water. Aside from microbiological pollution, high fluoride content water is one of most serious problems African countries. This study aimed contribute availability by developing a point-of-use purifier using an aluminum oxide-based flocculent-disinfectant composite. Batch experiments were conducted determine factors affecting removal efficiency (FRE) and E. coli log reduction efficiency. AO 75 mg/L, 800 mg/L alum, lime (35% alum dose), 1.5 Ca(OCl)₂ doses achieved 95% FRE 5 log10 reductions 15 as initial concentration ([F−]0), 105 CFU/100 mL concentration. [F−]0 affected but showed no effect on reduction. The optimum pH solution for both was found be range 4–8. Three prototypes powder form developed. tested real samples Ethiopian Rift Valley, results within standards, thus indicating capability developed products purify contaminated human consumption.
